I recently spent 2 days in Taipei for my late summer vacation — only 3 hours from Tokyo (16 hours from New York). I had a great time and took some memorabilia. ELLE Decor: 33 Notable Bright Gens

ELLE Decoration (Jakarta, Indonesia) includes John Kudos in the "Notable Bright Gen" list. Big thanks to the editors, who explained that "Gen" stands for "Generation" and "Genius". The list is made up of Indonesian artists and creatives who have and will achieve global recognition.

Encounters at Princeton

It was 4:55 p.m. when we hopped on a NJ Transit double decker, headed for a summer gathering and the opening of Encounters: Conflict, Dialogue, Discovery at the Princeton University Art Museum. We had designed a number of exhibition graphics and posters a few weeks ago, and we were off to see them in person. We had picked a vibrant purple Pantone color to brand the exhibition graphics because it resonates with Yinka Shonibare's oversized C-print titled The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (Africa). But not until we saw these posters in the mix of other NJ Transit posters, had we realized how much it would stand out. The exhibit, dispersed throughout the museum's two floors, is organized into five keyword categories that we highlighted in bright colors. These keywords are meant to help us visualize how various work from diverse regions/eras interconnect with one another. The carry card we designed was mentioned in Town Topics' write up as "A large, attractively designed hand-out showing a plan of the museum is accompanied by a colorfully printed essay about the exhibit. . . ." Encounters will be on view until September 23 at Princeton University Art Museum, free for public.

Performing Arts Japan 2013–2014

The Japan Foundation New York calls for grant application for Performing Arts Japan 2013–2014. This is a great opportunity to receive financial support for non-profit organizations in the US and Canada that aim to introduce Japanese performing arts to local audiences. Check out the details and good luck! We designed an animated web banner and a folded flyer in stark fluorescent yellow. The flyers can be tiled as an attention grabber.

JA+U: Japan Architecture + Urbanism

We recently launched an e-commerce website for Shinkenchiku-sha, the definitive architectural publisher in Japan with international followers. As part of the project we designed a new logo that explains the fusion of two magazines: JA (Japan Architect) and a+u (Architecture+Urbanism). We visited Japan in January this year for a kick-off meeting with the staff and to celebrate Oshogatsu (Japanese New Year). We started the project by extensive planning of their existing inventory and fulfillment system and how they would be integrated with the new website, a process that took nearly three months to finalize. Then we created design concepts that would allow the editorial team to publish content on the website on a daily basis to generate traffic. The final, developed website is tablet- and touch-friendly and supports check-out in three international currencies. We're extremely pleased with how it turns out and enjoys the amazing architectural photographs and articles published by the editors. If you're like us, then you spend most of your time in front of a laptop. When we learned about LUMO, I realized how much slouching is a problem for all of us. I love the integration with iPhone and iPad to keep track of your posture stats. They have raised $100k to realize the project, but there's still time to get your LUMOback before 2013.

ADC YGX Judging

I was invited to judge the Young Guns competition this year. Going through over 550 entries in two online rounds wasn't easy with my typical schedule, but when I came across truly amazing work it was all worth it. Cheers to all the judges for completing the 3rd round. Choosing the winners from the shortlist of 200 was the hardest task of all... We ended up with under 40 Young Gunners this year.
